Selector shaft seal replacement?

Leaking from the selector shaft seal, any help in going about it? Thanks in advance.

The book shows replacing them as part of an overhaul, however they are both installed from the exterior of the case. As such it should be possible to replace them without tearing the transmission apart. I would suggest doing it as part of a service, so you don't take a shower in transmission fluid. Drain the fluid and drop the pan.

Now to change the seal you unbolt the lever from the side. Then use some brake cleaner to clean off all the crud from around the seal. Then use a screw to pull the old seal out like these videos:

Then use a piece of tubing or pipe to install the new seal.

Thanks a lot. You mentioned “them” is it more than 1? It’s a 2000 Tacoma 2.7 pre runners sr5. Do you happen to know the part number?

The shaft goes through the transmission, so it has a seal on both sides of the transmission. However, if it's only leaking on the lever side you don't need to do both. They only list a full overhaul kit not the individual seals.

The better kit is available through the dealer, for the aftermarket kits you need the numbers off the transaxle, so you get all the correct seals. There were a few minor changes made over the years. A dealer can give you the newest part number using your VIN number.

So I purchased all that I needed from the dealer. No more leaks thanks to you once more. However, for some reason when I put it in reverse I noticed that my backup camera is not coming on, neither the reverse light but it is running just fine no problem. When I am in reverse and I barely pushed forward onto the gear leveler I notice the camera light comes on but not when it’s sitting directly in reverse. Any idea what I might’ve done accidentally?

Sounds like the shifter position switch isn't adjusted just right. Just loosen the bolt slightly Put the truck in reverse and rotate the switch until it stops. Now put it into reverse with blocked wheels and slowly move the switch until you see the lights come on. Make a mark on the switch showing where you stopped, now rotate a bit more until they go off. Mark. Now rotate the switch to be between those two marks. Test the shifter and be sure it is correct.
